HIKING

IT’S TIME TO DO SOME

Hiking to the Mt. Fremont fire lookout at sunset is a breathtaking experience. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky lights up in vibrant hues, casting a golden glow over the rugged landscape, making every step feel like you're walking through a dream. But then... You have to hike back in the dark!

HIKING Mt. FREMONT FIRE LOOKOUT

GETTING THERE

The hike begins at the Sunrise Visitor Center, the highest point in Mount Rainier National Park accessible by vehicle. From the parking lot, take the Sourdough Ridge Trail, a well-marked path that leads to the Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout junction. Expect an early start if you want to secure a parking spot, especially during peak summer months.

THE HIKE

The initial section of the hike follows the Sourdough Ridge Trail, offering stunning views almost immediately. You’ll traverse a well-maintained path lined with wildflowers (in summer) and might even spot marmots sunbathing on the rocks!

After about 1.5 miles, you’ll reach the Frozen Lake junction, where multiple trails intersect. Follow the sign pointing to Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout. This is where the terrain becomes rockier and more exposed, so be prepared for wind and changing weather conditions. The last mile of the hike features steep drop-offs but rewards hikers with jaw-dropping views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding valleys.

REACHING THE LOOKOUT

Upon arrival, you’ll find the historic Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout, perched at 7,181 feet. The lookout was built in the 1930s and remains a scenic spot to soak in 360-degree views of Mount Rainier, Grand Park, and, on clear days, even the Olympic Mountains.

TIPS FOR A GREAT HIKE

Check the Weather: Conditions can change rapidly, and wind is common at the lookout.

Bring Layers: Even in summer, the wind at the lookout can be chilly.

Start Early: The trail is popular, and parking at Sunrise fills up fast.

Watch Your Step: The final section has some steep drop-offs, so use caution.

Respect Wildlife: Keep an eye out for marmots, mountain goats, and even black bears, but maintain a safe distance.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout hike is an unforgettable experience that showcases some of the best views in Mount Rainier National Park. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a rewarding day hike, this trail delivers stunning scenery, a touch of history, and the perfect vantage point to admire the majesty of Mount Rainier.
